Current Discussion (Classical Music)

Meanwhile, back in Cambridge . . . .

I’ve now enjoyed two rehearsal hearings of stars & guitars complete. It is one wild ride. I feel a bit about it, as Maria at times seems to feel, fresh from finishing a canvas: not completely sure what I think of it, but at this point, I cannot (nor would) change a note of it. Overall, I think I like it a good deal. What is gratifying (setting aside my own je ne sais quoi) is how enthusiastic the flautist is for the piece, and his infectious excitement for performing it next week. The harpist is (simply by temperament, I think) more reserved. Before they started to play it last night, Mary Jane asked me if she was playing her solo cadenza all right (and sure she is). I returned that it was entire cheek on my own part, as someone who doesn’t play the harp, to compose such a cadenza. But then, Peter and I immediately followed with the observation that many composers must have written harp cadenzas, who were not themselves harpists.

Cheers,
~Karl

jessica:

No, I haven't heard it yet, but I'm sure it's a great recording that I must have...

karlhenning:

Somebody has to tell you to quit harping on it...~g~

ACD:

Are you taking bets: if so, I'll bet they knew about it, all right.

lulu:

Welcome back!

Listening this morning to Richter's 1986 live recording of the Diabelli Variations: very natural and honest playing, much more down-to-earth than the virtuosic version by Stephen Bishop. Each has it's thing to say, and I admire both performances immensely.

Jessica!

I love Liszt's piano music & Berman was a great interpreter. I saw him in the early 1980s (?) at a soldout concert at Carnegie Hall. Oh my gosh, what a great performance! I distinctly remember Berman playing Liszt's Nuages & muttering to myself that Liszt had invented Impressionism with that piece! What excitement Berman created in those days!

Jess..

Just returned from the West Coast and saw your post on the Transcendental Etudes.

I do have the Berman recording you pictured and it is indeed a fiery performance.

There are quite a few other recordings of it that I suggest you look into:

Jeno Jando, Russell Sherman, Cziffra, Kissin, Richter and Bolet are superb interpreters of this work.

I was fortunate to hear Sherman and Bolet playing the Etudes live and the Bolet was so staggering , it almost made me quit the piano and try some other instrument. One of the most memorable experiences of my musical life. :)

YHM.

Wow! What happened to all our excellent formatting? Is this temporary? Is there a problem we can solve here?

It's called "Quick Response", and it's in addition to, NOT a replacement for, the regular response form. I've just disabled it. True to their noxious habit of adding new "Mods" (optional modifications) to the board in an enabled state rather than disabled so that each board owner can make the decision to enable it or not, FreeForums added this Mod along with several other new ones in an enabled state. I've disabled them all as they're of no use to the CM&OF.

Thanks for staying on top of things, ACD. That was really annoying while it lasted. It looked to me like "back to the basics," and was a real pain to navigate.

NEW CD DEPT:

Have just finished listening to Jean-Efflam Bavouzet's Debussy (Volume 3 of the complete 4 CDs), and am happy to report concurrence with the overwhelmingly positive critical reaction to his playing. This young man has a magical touch, with deep sensitivity and feeling: he knows how to make these pieces sing, and does so without the slightest maudlin emotion. Very, very satisfying:

It's no surprise that I agree completely with maestrob, whose opinions I don't take lightly, about this disc by Bavouzet. (Even though I still disagree with him about the merits of Kovacevich's Diabellis CD.) I wrote a laudatory review of Bavouzet's CD here.

Thanks for your Stravinsky recordings. I love Printemps and definitely hope to get at least one of the recordings. Been on a book buying binge but will eventually get those cds (or at least some of them).
