I can't remember who I mentioned this to (either here or elsewhere) but for those living in DC area, the State Department is having its annual book fair this weekend and next weekend at the State Department on 23rd street. Haven't been there in years but plan to return again. It's great fun browsing through old books and getting some really great bargains.

Well, tonight Sarah Palin is appearing on Saturday Night Live. Will she refuse to read the script ala the VP debate? Or, better yet, will they just let her talk in her own words, providing the show with its funniest materials in years? We wait in anticipation.

amazon:

That site amazes me. I keep thinking there are millions of elves running around keeping track of each individual buyer.

Several months ago (March) I preordered a book. Kept showing up on my "current orders." A few weeks ago, I was reading NYTimes Book Review and there as an ad announcing the arrival of that book. Soooo, I went to amazon and they had charged my account. Two days later, I received the book.

And Harry Potters' books arrived on the date promised.

How does amazon do this??? I hate to put bookstores out of business but the service at amazon is incredible, not to mention the lower prices. yes, I miss going through the stacks (and I still do at Borders and Barnes and Nobles but most of my buying is from amazon. I've even bought from UK and service is great. Faster than post office here which took a month to get a card from my sister. And she only lives in Philly.

Blumsie: I agree. I've always received exceptional service from amazon. One classy thing they do in particular is that if there's something wrong with the CD I've ordered, they often send me the replacement even before I've returned the original flawed item. I think their customer service is the key to their strength in the market.

How appropos!
This morning my Lucrezia Borgia with Caballe/Vanzo was skipping all over the place.
I have e-mailed the seller in hopes of having them rectify this recording for me before I go to Amazon with my problem.

nyoka:

You might also try spraying it with water or cd cleaner and dry with a cloth. It has helped me many times, especially with dvds from Netflix with I try before returning the disc back to Neflix.

Seriously? I never heard of such a thing.
I guess it's worth a try. Thanks Lulusheen.

As I'm sure Lulu knows but simply forgot to mention, when wiping the CD clean and dry after the spritz of lukewarm water (and it's a good idea to use nothing more exotic than lukewarm water), be certain you do NOT wipe the CD in a circular direction, but at right angles to it (i.e., from disc center to edge).

Just a word of caution.

Youse guys are a veritable font of information. I would have definitely gone circular.
Thanks for the warning.

I learned that trick from Netflix, too. Apart from their large library and excellent customer service -- and despite their ill-informed but often humorous "abstracts" summarizing opera dvds -- I concluded that they are a good investment (as in NFLX, on top of the personal expenditure for the monthly subscription). :)

Mogliettina: I should have further cautioned you that if your tap water is "hard" (i.e., has a high mineral content), it will leave a residue on the CD. In such a case, best to use distilled water for the job.

Further to the muslim/arab issue in the election, this article sums it up nicely.

During this election, we have seen the spectacle of two presidential candidates fighting over one voter while snubbing an entire segment of the American population worthy of their attention.

We in the Muslim-American community look wistfully at people like Joe the Plumber, wishing that we too could be courted for our vote by the presidential candidates.

At the same time, we look gratefully at figures like former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who reassure us that there is hope for greater acceptance of Muslim-Americans.

Indeed, Ali. By way of consolation to that community, it might recall how long it took for a Catholic to become President: nearly two centuries. It takes generations for prejudices to erode (and, alas, they never disappear entirely).

On a more amusing note: it's worth checking back on [urlnw]http://palinaspresident.us[/urlnw] from time to time, as they add new bits daily. Not necessarily riotously funny new bits every time, of course.
