peter:

The Washington Post Express listed Filomena as the best Italian restaurant. I won't argue with that.

When are you coming in to DC?

Sheila: I knew we had good taste! :D
As it happens, I'll be in DC Dec 15-17, and either the 15th or 16th would work for a reunion/dinner. Beethoven's birthday, anyone?

Thanks for that! I always loved the Bowery Boys and Leo Gorcey. I wasted my youth going to the movies laughing at those nuts (probably television since I might have been too young for when the movies came out to see them first run or I might not have been born then). But I grew up watching them on tv and they never failed to make me laugh.

peter:

I'll be in NY to see Hoffmann during those days. I'm spending three days up there. Happy to be in NY; sorry to miss you (and Filomena).

Thanks. If I see that gentleman again, I will so inform him.

Someone tell me why we need computers?

I spent three hours this morning trying to get my computer running. I rebooted at least four times when windows decided to do a disk check which ran for what seemed to be about two hours. When I finally got online, I was kicked off by Windows doing an update!

After getting my life back together again after my stolen wallet, every gain I made was almost destroyed by a recalcitrant computer and/or Windows!

So, was life better off without computers????? (Needless to say, we'd never have met, either in person or online!)

That's the good thing. But at a hefty price, i.e., sanity! If I had any religious beliefs, I would have lost them a long, long, long time ago, say, around the first time I ever used a computer.

Sheila: sorry to miss you next month! But I should be back on the DC trail again in the new year (after two nearly back to back trips to Budapest).

Ahhh! The season's first bowl of McCann's Steel-Cut Irish Oatmeal: slow-cooked with added (in the last five minutes of cooking) cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins and a judicious pinch of salt, and dressed in the bowl with butter, brown sugar, and cream.

Veritable ambrosia.

Hmmm... that makes my instant oatmeal seem rather pathetic. Well, at least I will be following that up with properly booked hard-boiled eggs (you're right; I haven't looked back since).

Is that oatmeal properly cut using Toledo steel, samurai steel or stainless steel? And does it come from Ulster, Cork or Donegal?

Give me good ol' Ma Thurzos with water, sugar and salt No dairy.

(Many years ago I read a novel where the person was in psychotherapy and kept talking about a whore house called Ma Thurzos. The sharp shrink finally put two and two together and realized he was talking about his childhood when his mother used to serve him Mother's Oats.)

High-carbon stainless steel, of course (mostly for hygienic reasons and ease of cleaning).

pczipott wrote:And does it come from Ulster, Cork or Donegal?

None of the above. From Kildare and Meath counties.

(How's that, wiseass? )
