Current Discussion (Off-Topic Chatter)

I realize there may be some positive things about a President Obama:

1. Race relations may improve now that the African American community will feel more of a stake in our shared society, and have more faith in the idea that any child can grow up to be president, which for many Blacks was an empty statement before now.

2. His natural leadership skills, obvious intelligence and articulate use of language will no doubt enhance the US's standing in the international community, at least temporarily.

3. The Democrats will not have George Bush to blame for all our problems, and have to face the realities of governing - which will humble somewhat their liberal agenda. But what will MSNBC do - attack Bill O'Reilly 24/7?

4. The Republican party will have to regroup and re-focus and hone its message - a task long overdue - and be ready to lead after the Democrats screw things up so badly that they are booted out of office ... mid term elections in just 2 years.

Politics is cyclical - so enjoy your run while it lasts -

I guess bitterness and graciousness can coexist in one sentiment.

Not at all a bad idea. The man's an idiot.

Aside from giving conservatism a bad name (and I ain't no conservative myself), the man gives face to every stereotype about the ugly, bullying, head-in-the-sand conservative.

More re Lieberman: I actually hope that if the Dems really dump on him and cast him into outer darkness, he might decide to caucus with the Republicans. In fact, the more I think about it, the more likely I think that is. If Reid and his colleages are too stupid and shortsighted to assume that they won't need every possible vote for their side, then they deserve what they get. Regardless, Lieberman will continue to vote as he always has: as a liberal Democrat on most social issues, and as a hawk (there actually used to be some of those among Democrats) on national security issues. Like I said, a true man of principle.

Cal..

Believe me, I know what I'm saying that Lieberman is motivated by one issue and he's obsessed by it.

Israel, and it's survival in the Middle East is what drives him and all other matters relative to the world are irrelevant.

His party affiliation is of little matter to him other than getting re-elected when his term is over. His only chance for survival then will be as a Republican, so he might as well join them now.

The Republicans will have to realize that they've gone too far to the extreme far right, even among voters of their own party. If they had let McCain be himself, rather than forcing him to pander to the radical wing of their party, he might be the president-elect.

The Democrats now have the extremely unenviable task of undoing all the major damage done to this country by the Repblicans in the past administration, a task that makes cleaning the Augean stables look like a walk in the park. Whatever errors they may make, they couldn't possibly make a bigger mess than that left by the Bush administration.

If this is valid, it sure did surprise me.

Is Sarah Palin Jewish?

Yes, based on Jewish tradition that makes one "Jewish" if born to a mother of Jewish ethnic decent, although touting at least a mask of evangelical christianity.

Harris, you'd better identify the above as a quotation and identify the source, to be in compliance with this forum's policies...

As for the implications: many evangelicals are already very pro-Israel, since they can hardly wait for the battle of Armageddon to begin; this would just give Palin a bit more motivation. Of course, their version of "pro-Israel" is a bit weird, since the last thing they want in the region is a lasting peace settlement, for the above reason.

Apropos of nothing...

The economic situation hit home this week, as I was laid off. Dec 5th will be my last day at my present job. No real worries, as I can take my time figuring out what I want to do in the next stage of my career and look for genuinely fulfilling possibilities.

And on Monday, we're off to Europe (with a stop in North Africa*) for a few weeks; fortunately, it was largely paid for last December! So I'll have lots of forum discussions to catch up on -- and I won't have a concern in the world for the emails that will be piling up at work!

*Part of the continent, not a country. Just in case anyone was confused. ;)

Cliftwood: I've edited your above post as it violated the single no-no on these forums as spelled out in the Introduction to this forum. I've edited your post rather than summarily deleting it as I suspect you were unaware of this single no-no. Please read the Introduction to this forum for details, which Introduction is the same for all forums on this board in respect of this single no-no.

Normally I would be rather concerned with the gloomy news you presented, but having met you and knowing how much you have on the ball, I have a feeling that you will make margueritas out of salt. 8-)

Thank you, all. Pepper: I'm not an alchemist, you know! There's not even any hydrogen or carbon or oxygen in NaCl!

My next career goal is to find a Maecenas to support me handsomely while I translate Hungarian literature into English.

I may have to settle for something just a tad more realistic. 8-)
